Willy Pogány (1882–1955) was a Hungarian-born American illustrator renowned for his enchanting depictions of myths, fairy tales, and classical literature. Born Vilmos András Feichtmann in Szeged, Hungary, he studied engineering before pursuing art in Budapest, Munich, and Paris. At 23, he moved to London, where he began illustrating children's books and produced a series of deluxe editions, including The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. In 1914, Pogány emigrated to the United States, settling in New York City, where he continued his illustration work and expanded into theater design, creating sets and costumes for productions at the Metropolitan Opera House. He also spent time in Hollywood, working on film set designs and celebrity portraits. Pogány's artistic style, characterized by intricate pen-and-ink drawings and vibrant color palettes, left a lasting impact on the Golden Age of Illustration.
