Kenyon Cox


Kenyon Cox (1856–1919) was an American painter, muralist, and art critic, recognized for his contributions to the American Renaissance. Born in Warren, Ohio, he studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts before continuing his education in Paris under Carolus-Duran and Jean-Léon Gérôme. Returning to New York in 1882, Cox became a prominent figure in the city's art scene, known for his allegorical murals in public buildings, including the Library of Congress and state capitols in Des Moines and St. Paul. He was a dedicated educator at the Art Students League of New York and served as president of the National Society of Mural Painters from 1915 to 1919. Cox's legacy endures through his classical style and enduring influence on American art and education.
