Henry Scwabe
Henry August Schwabe (1843–1916) was a German‑born American painter, designer, and teacher celebrated for his portraits, landscapes, and liturgical stained‑glass windows. Trained in Cologne, Munich, and Paris, where he attended the Académie Julian, he emigrated to the United States in 1871 and continued his studies in New York under William Merritt Chase. Settling in Newark, New Jersey, Schwabe taught at the Newark Art League, where he befriended and mentored fellow artist Charles Schreyvogel. His glasswork won a gold medal at the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition, and his richly colored oils and watercolors of figures and rural scenes have appeared in auctions and distinguished collections. Schwabe’s diverse career bridged European academic traditions and American Impressionist sensibilities, spanning fine art, stained glass, and education.
