Henrietta Ord Jones (1855-1934)
Henrietta Ord Jones was a pioneering American ceramicist and head of the ceramics program at Washington University in St. Louis from 1900 to 1927. Trained at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts and under Franz Bischoff and Otto Punsch, she became known for her hand-crafted art pottery featuring thickly applied colored glazes, matte finishes, and subtly modeled forms. Jones exhibited widely, winning prizes at the St. Louis Artists’ Guild and the St. Louis Art League, and her work was recognized alongside Newcomb and Rookwood pottery. In 1927, she managed HOJ Pottery, continuing her commitment to high-quality studio ceramics. She emphasized form and glaze over bright colors or figurative decoration, describing her pieces as “all straight art pottery” made entirely by hand.
