David Simpson


David Simpson, born in 1928 in Pasadena, California, is an American abstract painter whose career has spanned over six decades. He studied at the California School of Fine Arts and earned his MFA from San Francisco State College before becoming a long‑time faculty member at the University of California, Berkeley. Simpson’s early work included striped and reductive compositions, and from the 1990s onward, he became known for “interference” paintings that shift in color and light depending on the viewer’s perspective. His work has been shown widely in solo and group exhibitions and is included in numerous public and private museum collections worldwide. Throughout his career, Simpson has been associated with movements in post‑war abstraction, including minimalism and color field painting.
