Benjamin Champney (1817-1907)

Benjamin Champney (1817–1907) was an American landscape painter closely associated with the White Mountain School. Born in New Ipswich, New Hampshire, he trained as a lithographer in Boston before studying painting in Paris in the early 1840s. After returning to the United States, he became one of the earliest and most influential artists to work in the White Mountains, helping establish North Conway as an artists’ center. His panoramic views, meticulous observation, and consistent presence in the region made him a defining figure in 19th-century New England landscape painting.
