William Baxter Closson
William Baxter Palmer Closson (1848–1926) was an American artist known for his work as a painter and wood engraver. Born in Thetford, Vermont, he studied at Thetford Academy before moving to Boston, where he apprenticed as a wood engraver with Samuel Smith Kilburn and studied drawing at the Lowell Institute. Closson worked as a freelance engraver for Century Co., Harper's Magazine, and various Boston book publishers. Between 1881 and 1883, he resided in Europe, engraving masterpieces for Harper's and exhibiting at the Paris Salon. In the 1890s, as photomechanical processes replaced wood engraving, Closson shifted to painting, creating landscapes and portraits.
