Samuel Colman
Samuel Colman (1832–1920) was an American painter and designer associated with the Hudson River School, known for his detailed landscapes and idealized natural scenes. Born in Portland, Maine, he trained as a decorative painter before studying in Europe, traveling widely to sketch landscapes in England and Italy. Colman exhibited at the National Academy of Design, where he was a member, and his work combined careful observation with Romantic sensibilities, often depicting dramatic mountains, forests, and waterfalls. In addition to painting, he designed stained glass, interiors, and decorative arts, contributing broadly to 19th-century American visual culture.
