Mary Brewster Hazelton (1868-1953)


Mary Brewster Hazelton (1868–1953) was an American painter from Milton, Massachusetts, recognized for her portraits, genre scenes, and figure studies. She studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, under Edmund Tarbell, Frank Benson, and Philip Hale, becoming associated with the Boston School. In 1896, she became the first woman awarded the Paige Traveling Scholarship, which allowed her to study in Europe. Hazelton exhibited widely, including at the Boston Art Club, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the Art Institute of Chicago. She was noted for her refined technique, sensitive handling of light, and elegant compositions, and remained an important figure among Boston’s women painters of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
