Marion Monks Chase

Marion Monks Chase (1874–1957) was an American painter associated with the development of modernist art in Boston during the early 20th century. She was a member of the Boston Five, a group of painters that included Charles Hovey Pepper, Charles Hopkinson, Carl Gordon Cutler, and Harley Perkins, who sought to expand the audience for modern art in the region. Chase worked in both watercolor and oil, producing landscapes, still lifes, and other subjects. Her paintings were exhibited in Boston and New York, including a 1929 solo exhibition at the Frank K. M. Rehn Galleries in New York. Her work reflects her engagement with the experimental approaches to color and composition emerging in American modernism.
