John Rollin Tilton
John Rollin Tilton (1828–1888) was an American painter renowned for his meticulous vedute—detailed, atmospheric landscapes of European locales. Born in New London, New Hampshire, he trained in Florence and Rome, where he became part of the expatriate American artists' colony. Tilton's oeuvre includes scenes of Venice, Lake Como, the Temple of Aphaea in Greece, and the ruins of Paestum in Italy. His works are characterized by a calm, restrained palette and precise architectural rendering, reflecting the influence of the vedutisti tradition. Tilton's art is held in collections such as the Brooklyn Museum and Bowdoin College Museum of Art.
