John J.A. Dixon

John Joseph Albert Dixon (1888–1962) was a Philadelphia-born painter who worked actively for over five decades. He studied under William Merritt Chase and was affiliated with the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Allied Artists of America, and the Philadelphia Sketch Club. Dixon was best known for his oil still lifes and portraits, though his body of work also includes etchings, watercolors, and sketches. He and his wife, sculptor Mildred Sartelle, remained committed to their art despite the challenges of the Great Depression. His legacy is preserved through a substantial family-held collection, representing only a fraction of his prolific output.
