George Lorenzo Noyes (1863–1945) was a self-taught American landscape artist, naturalist, mineral collector, and writer whose life and work were closely connected to western Maine. Born in Norway, Maine, he developed a deep interest in the region’s mountains, forests, lakes, and streams and remained closely associated with the area throughout his life. Known as “Shavey” and the “Thoreauvian of Maine,” Noyes produced paintings and drawings inspired by his close observation of the natural world. He also operated the Noyes Mountain Quarry in Greenwood, Maine, and exhibited paintings and sketches at the Erichman Print Gallery in New York in the 1920s. The Maine Historical Society holds a substantial collection of his drawings and archival material.
