Eleazer Hutchinson Miller
Eleazer Hutchinson Miller (1831–1921) was an American artist active primarily in Washington, D.C., known for portraits, views, illustration, and etching. Born in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, on February 28, 1831, he showed an early talent for drawing and began painting portraits before receiving formal instruction, later studying art in Washington while supporting himself through work at the National Intelligencer. By 1885, he had opened his own studio and devoted himself largely to portraiture, counting prominent figures among his sitters. In addition to oil paintings, Miller produced watercolors, crayon drawings, and etchings, including illustrations for Robert Burns’s Tam O’Shanter and Rebecca Ruter Springer’s Songs by the Sea (1889). He died in Washington, D.C., in 1921 after declining health in his later years.
