Charles Hoffbauer
Charles Hoffbauer (1875–1957) was a French-born American painter and muralist known for historical subjects and large-scale public commissions. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Fernand Cormon, François Flameng, and Gustave Moreau, and received recognition at the 1900 Exposition Universelle. After moving to New York in 1909, he established a successful career in the United States and later became a U.S. citizen. Hoffbauer is best known for his murals in Richmond, Virginia, and the Missouri State Capitol. His work combined academic training with a dramatic approach to historical narrative.
