André Hambourg


André Hambourg was a leading figure in 20th-century French painting, recognized for his luminous harbors, Mediterranean vistas, and refined cityscapes. Born in Paris, he trained at the École des Beaux-Arts and won the Prix de la Villa Abd-el-Tif in 1933, beginning formative years in North Africa. He worked alongside notable contemporaries, including Maurice Utrillo, Foujita, and Bernard Buffet. Appointed official painter of the French Navy in 1952, Hambourg traveled extensively, capturing ports and coastlines worldwide. His work was exhibited internationally and is represented in major public collections, including the Musée National de la Marine in Paris. Hambourg’s paintings continue to perform strongly at auction, reflecting both his critical and market significance.
